US student group publishes blacklist of teachers too "politizised"

Friday 28 November 2003.

The Young Conservatives, a Texas-based neo-conservative student political organisation, has published a blacklist of 10 professors at the University of Texas whom they believe do not conduct unbiased and "intellectually honest" courses.

The issues which were targeted in the group’s accusation concerned racial discrimination, gay and gender rights, and of course any criticism or independent analysis of the war against terrorism since 2001.

That year, the American Council of Trustees and Alumni, a conservative group, had already published a report accusing more than 100 college scholars, administrators and students of making anti-American statements. But this is apparently the first blacklist published by students, and more of the same kind are being prepared in Texas and the US by conservative student groups.

These groups consider themselves as victims of "liberal" intellectual terrorism exerted in the universities since the 60s. But they represent the official neo-conservative and right-wing christian-influenced governmental line, as well as a new and unsettling form of popular witch-hunting. To anybody who’s seen the film Bob Roberts this may bring back a few memories...
