Peeping Tom - "Peeping Tom"

Wednesday 31 May 2006

Patton’s back… And boy does that just make me feel spiffy! Peeping Tom is a project that Mike Patton has been “announcing” – in more or less obvious ways – for some years now and to be able to lay eyes on that album’s cover will probably end up sending a million chills down those spines. Originally, the Peeping Tom was said to include a number of the masters of the DJ scene. It was known that Patton’s close friend, Dan the Automator would have an important part to play but the other names stayed rumours. And then the talking crowds got a little over-excited and names like DJ Shadow started springing out from nowhere… Well, DJ Shadow wasn’t part of the trip – this time anyway. But don’t let that disappoint you because this record has names to rival the main man.

Just play that first track and feel the sound waves blow into your face with Odd Nosdam –from the Anticon crew – working the decks while Patton screeches away. And the tracks just flow, each one better than the last… Rahzel and The Automator add some beat-boxing frenzy and some samples to a melting pot where you can hear Bebel Gilberto or Nora Jones. Let’s not forget the DJ’s Kid Koala (scratch-genius), Amon Tobin or rappers Kool Keith and Doseone – one of Anticon’s co-founders.

The album is rock-solid. The basic idea is that if you listen to this you’ll be exposed to a mix of Faith No More influenced electro-hip-hop with Fantomas screams… The experience is more than pleasant. It’s magical. Since my first hearing, I’ve listened to the entire album countless numbers of times. Evidently, you’ll have your favourites but every one of these collaborations sounds perfect.

Patton never ceases to amaze… One can’t help but be impressed by the time he must give up to be so productive. And talk about someone who never disappoints… Enjoy!
