Coca Cola summoned by Indian court over abuse of water ressources

Tuesday 25 November 2003

The Coca Cola company has appeared today for a second time in front of the Panchayat council of Palakkad, Kerala, for the alledged abuse of water ressources since 1998, in an 1.2 miles perimeter around its factory plant. Coca-cola had already appeared in court on November 17th, but its justifications were proved "insufficient".

Coca-cola is accused of having destroyed the land and the rural economy based on coconut and vegetables, which had to be subsequently abandoned. The Panchayat council will reach its final decision on tuesday, December 2nd.

In the meantime, Coca-cola has promised to build water infrustructures and educational systems for the nearby villages...I really wish we’ll be able to get more information on when and how that generous promise will be fulfilled...
